In a significant shift, Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow as the busiest airport in Europe, based on passenger numbers recorded in July. The Turkish airport managed to handle 8.15 million travelers, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This change marks a notable development in Europe’s aviation landscape, where Heathrow’s figures dropped by 1.5% compared to the same month last year, while Istanbul Airport experienced a 2.3% increase in traffic.
The drop in passenger numbers at Heathrow has been partly attributed to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. These circumstances have intensified calls for the UK government to give the green light to Heathrow’s proposed third runway. With its current two runways operating near full capacity, the proposed expansion, estimated at £33 billion, could significantly boost its annual capacity to about 150 million passengers.
Heathrow officials argue that the recent statistics underscore the urgent need for expanded capacity to enhance the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism sectors. The airport’s push for expansion is framed as a strategic necessity to maintain its competitive edge on the international stage.
Meanwhile, Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, has been able to leverage its larger site and 24/7 operations to accommodate growing passenger numbers. Currently, the airport operates three runways, with plans for a fourth runway to be operational by the end of 2026, which could further consolidate its position as a leading hub in the region.
While Heathrow grapples with these challenges, other UK airports like London Stansted and Manchester are celebrating record-breaking figures. In July, London Stansted and Manchester airports experienced their busiest month ever, with passenger numbers reaching 3.1 million and 3.4 million respectively, signaling a robust demand for air travel within the UK.
