Amid concerns over Middle East tensions and rising oil prices, South Korean stocks showed a robust performance on Monday, driven by significant gains in the semiconductor sector. This comes as investors continue to display a strong interest in artificial intelligence and semiconductor-related shares, a trend that has buoyed the market despite broader uncertainties.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) surged by 113.49 points, or 1.65%, closing at 7,007.72. This marks the third consecutive session of gains for the index, underscoring the resilience of South Korea’s stock market in the face of geopolitical and economic pressures.
Leading the charge were shares of major semiconductor companies, with Samsung Electronics seeing a notable increase of 4.98%, reaching 274,000 won. SK hynix, another key player in the semiconductor industry, also experienced growth, rising 0.59% to 1.87 million won. Additionally, SK Square, the parent company of SK hynix, advanced by 4.45%.
While the semiconductor sector provided a significant boost, the broader market displayed mixed results. Automotive giant Hyundai Motor saw its shares fall by 1.64%, and LG Energy Solution declined by 3.3%, indicating varied performance across different industries.
Adding to the day’s financial movements, the Korean won strengthened against the U.S. dollar, closing at 1,381 won per dollar, an increase of 4.5 won from the previous session. This currency movement reflects broader investor sentiment and economic factors influencing the South Korean market.
