The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a directive mandating inspections on Boeing 737 Max aircraft for potential cracks in a critical component of the fuselage. This inspection requirement will impact an estimated 471 planes, with the process slated to commence in September. The focus of this inspection is on the “bear strap,” a structural element that reinforces the fuselage near the exit doors. This action comes in response to findings of similar cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which led to earlier inspections of those aircraft.
While no such cracks have been detected in the 737 Max series so far, the FAA has highlighted that the aircraft shares similar design and production processes with its predecessors. As a result, there is concern that the 737 Max could potentially experience the same issues. The agency emphasized the risk that unnoticed cracks pose, warning that they could compromise the structural integrity of a key component of the aircraft.
Boeing has been collaborating with airlines regarding this issue since it was first identified in 2019.
